Ian nevertheless asked me to join the Blockheads. They needed someone to replace his writing partner and keyboard player/guitarist Chaz Jankel, who had left the band, and they had been off the road for some time in the process of making their next album. Ian had allowed several months to do this – I had never spent more than three or four weeks recording an album. A season ticket got me commuting between Southend and Knightsbridge three or four days a week.

I realised the Blockheads were a bit stumped – Chaz Jankel had been their musical director, as well as a songwriter and musician, and in his absence they were trying to produce the album themselves. I also saw that the guys in the band were by no means well off when you considered the massive record sales they had generated. Discontent and old resentments were simmering and would sometimes erupt as we spent days and weeks in that little studio. Ian would mollify people with promises of bigger money for this album.
